Graduates who have successfully defended their bachelor’s thesis and completed their final evaluation are issued a standard certificate awarding the bachelor’s degree and conferring the educational qualification Bachelor of Philology in specialization Eastern languages and literatures (including translation), Arabic as the first foreign language.
Programme learning outcomes
PLO 1. Communicate fluently on professional matters with specialists and non-specialists in the national language and foreign languages (Arabic and French), both orally and in writing, and use these skills to facilitate effective intercultural communication.
PLO 2. Work effectively with information: select necessary information from various sources, including professional literature and electronic databases; critically analyse and interpret it; organise, classify and systematise it.
PLO 3. Organise one’s own learning and self-education.
PLO 4. Understand the fundamental principles of human existence, nature and society.
PLO 5. Collaborate with colleagues, representatives of other cultures and religions, and those with different political views, etc.

PLO 9. Characterise the dialectal and social varieties of the Arabic language and describe the sociolinguistic situation in the countries of the Arab East.
PLO 10. Be familiar with the norms of literary Arabic and French and be able to apply them in practical work.

Examination regulations and grading scale
The assessment of students’ knowledge in each subject comprises continuous assessment, module-based assessment and final assessment. Continuous assessment takes the form of oral questioning, written assignments, seminar presentations, essays and presentations. Module-based assessment takes the form of a written module test or examination. Final assessment includes tests, differentiated tests, examinations (oral-written, written, in test form), a final examination, a comprehensive final examination, and the defence of the Bachelor’s thesis.

Work placement
The communication and translation placement in two languages (Arabic and French) is a compulsory component. The placements take place at the Egyptian Centre for Arabic Language and Culture at Taras Shevchenko National University, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (for Arabic) and the French Centre at Taras Shevchenko National University (for French).
The internship takes place on the basis of bilateral agreements between Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and educational institutions in partner countries, in particular Egypt, Qatar and Kuwait, provided that the student has an average grade of no less than 75.

Occupational profiles of graduates
A Bachelor of Arts in Philology can work in academic, literary and publishing, and educational sectors; in print and digital media, in advertising and PR agencies; in various humanitarian-focused trusts, associations and foundations, museums, arts and cultural centres, and so on. Knowledge of Arabic and French opens up employment opportunities in various sectors of the economy where services are required for translation, facilitating communication and drafting texts in these languages, as well as in travel agencies and international organisations, and for providing intercultural mediation services involving the creation, analysing, editing, evaluating and translating spoken and written texts of various styles in the languages studied, using modern scientific methods and practical techniques.
