Prerequisites and co-requisites
Before the course begins, students should be familiar with the basic categories of linguistics (stylistics, lexicology), the main textual and discursive categories, and the general principles of editing texts in Ukrainian. Possess the necessary minimum of editing skills to work with texts of various genres. Be able to apply tools from all linguistic levels (phonetic, morphological, lexical-phraseological, syntactic, stylistic, and ethnocultural) in solving specific research tasks related to translation and editing.
Course content
Along with other research-oriented courses, this course introduces students to the principles, forms, and conceptual framework of communication in an academic setting, as well as the tools for conducting academic research on foreign-language theoretical sources and linguistic materials. This course provides students with the necessary scientific and practical tools for systematizing and analyzing specialized linguistic phenomena, as well as for the accurate interpretation and editing of specialized texts. The course will help students learn to avoid undesirable cross-linguistic deviations, improve their skills in editing texts translated into Ukrainian, and effectively solve translation tasks, particularly regarding terminology creation. The theoretical knowledge and skills acquired during the course will also assist in the creation of their own academic texts, particularly their master’s thesis.
