Know:
1) the main stages of the development of the Turkish language and the historical context of each stage;
2) the phonetic and grammatical structure of modern Turkish.
Be able to:
1) apply knowledge of the development of Turkish syntax and word formation;
2) use the terminology necessary to understand and analyze all aspects of the functioning of literary and colloquial Turkish.
Be able to:
1) identify key information while reading;
2) comprehend the main content of news, radio and television programs, and films presented in literary and colloquial Turkish.
Course content
The comprehensive course «General Theoretical Course in Turkic Languages, Part 5. Dialects of Turkic Languages» is a component of the educational and professional training program for specialists at the «Bachelor» level, field of knowledge 03 – Humanities, major 035 – Philology, specialty 035.068 – «Eastern Languages and Literatures (including translation), first – Turkish». This course is taught in the first semester of the third year for a total of 60 hours (2.0 ECTS credits), including 12 hours of lectures, 14 hours of practical classes, and 34 hours of independent study. The course provides an introduction to the basic terms of dialectology; an examination of the modern dialectal division of the Turkish language in the Anatolian region and the characteristic features of dialectal structure in various parts of the defined geographical region; an introduction to the history of dialectology and the main trends in research in this field at the present stage; and an examination of the issues surrounding the interaction of vernacular dialects with the literary language. The course also covers the development of dialectological science in Turkey and the differences between literary and vernacular Turkish. The course concludes with an exam.
