Course content
The course “Practical Translation from English” is one of the key components of the comprehensive training program for students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in the major “035 Philology.” The course includes practical translation exercises, is taught in the fourth semester, and comprises 90 hours (3 ECTS credits): 44 hours of practical work and 46 hours of independent study. The course consists of three thematic sections, two thematic quizzes, two midterm exams, and one final exam for the practical course, culminating in a final exam. The content, methods, and teaching aids correspond to the course objectives and conditions. English language instruction is based on the fundamental principles of the communicative approach to foreign language teaching, utilizing authentic materials and simulating real-life communicative situations. The principle of communicativeness is defined as the primacy of communicative goals within the four types of speech activity relative to the secondary nature of linguistic and thematic material as the basis for the further development of communication skills. The practical English course is comprehensive in nature: it focuses on students’ mastery of the phonetic, lexical, and grammatical norms of the English language and aims to help students acquire and/or further develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in English; the development of students’ English communicative competence as a set of knowledge, skills, and abilities that ensure effective intercultural communication in both oral and written forms. Independent work is aimed at developing students’ ability to learn independently, acquire and improve the necessary knowledge and skills by completing various written and oral assignments (essays, reports, presentations, term papers, etc.) on topics covered by the curriculum.
