Learning outcomes

PLO19. To be familiar with various linguistic schools and movements (literary schools and trends), critically analyze historical achievements and the latest developments in linguistic (literary) science, and demonstrate one’s own interpretation of literary (linguistic) phenomena.
PLO22. To apply various linguistic and literary research methods and systematic analysis of literary texts, and identify their compositional, genre, and stylistic features.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites for mastering or choosing the academic discipline:
- successful mastery of the Ukrainian language and English language at the B2 level;
- to know the general pecu;liarities of the English language as a holistic system;
- to possess basic skills and competence in language analysis in its systemic, structural and functional dimensions.
Course content
The aim of the course is to develop students' professional competence via mastering basic theoretical concepts of translation studies; to acquire fundamental translation methods and techniques; to form basic practical skills in processing specialized (pedagogical) texts in the process of translating from English to Ukrainian and from Ukrainian into English.
The discipline is designed to provide students with knowledge about the essence of translation and the basic concepts of translation studies, as well as the peculiarities of translating texts of various genres at different linguistic levels. The applied nature of the course is related to the development of translation competence through the formation of practical skills in analyzing and transforming specialized texts in translation process from English into Ukrainian, necessary for future professional activities. The course is an elective discipline and consists of two modules.
The objectives of the course are:
• to form an understanding of the specifics of the professional activities of a translator of specialized texts;
• to provide students with an initial theoretical foundation and general ideas about methods of text analysis and segmentation in the process of determining translation paths;
• to familiarize them with well-known translation techniques from English to their native language and vise versa;
• to develop creative thinking in choosing translation methods.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course provides the following forms of work: oral answers at practical classes, written translation, independent work and final module test. The main teaching methods are lectures, heuristic discussions, and group discussions.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment is regulated by the ECTS system, which involves evaluating the material studied, specifically assessing theoretical knowledge – learning outcomes, which comprise 30% of the overall score – and practical skills, which comprise 70% of the overall score. The maximum and minimum scores for each form of work during the semester are as follows: oral answer at practical lesson– max.: 20, min.: 10; written translation – max.: 40, min.: 25; module test – max.: 40, min.: 25. The course ends with a credit test.
