Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Successful completion of the courses “Introduction to turkic philology,” “Linguistic and cultural studies of turkey,” and “Theoretical grammar of the turkish language.” 2. Understanding of the methods and principles of comparative-historical linguistics, ability to compare cognate forms across different turkic languages. 3. Ability to work with a basic vocabulary (100 or 200 words). 4. Ability to work with academic texts in foreign languages (English, turkish, or german). 5. Ability to distinguish between the types of writing systems used by turkic peoples (runic, uyghur, arabic, latin, cyrillic).
Course content
The course “Territorial Variation of the Turkic Language Group in Synchrony and Diachrony” is offered in the second semester to second-year Master’s degree candidates in the major 035 Philology (Eastern Languages and Literatures, including Translation), the first language - turkish. The course is dedicated to a comprehensive study of the Turkic linguistic world as a dynamic system that is constantly changing in space (territorially) and time (historically). The course aims to develop systematic knowledge of the areal differentiation of the Turkic linguistic world, the mechanisms of the emergence of territorial variants, their functioning in diachronic and synchronic contexts, and combines methods from linguistic geography, comparative-historical linguistics, and sociolinguistics. It consists of two content modules and concludes with a final credit.

Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment is based on a system that evaluates theoretical knowledge (accounting for 40% of the total grade) and practical skills (accounting for 60% of the total grade). Assessment of semester work: 1. Seminar participation (contributions to discussions, text analysis): 3–5 points. 2. Research paper/presentation: 5 to 15 points. 3. Individual research project: 10 to 25 points. 4. Module exam: 5–15 points. 5. Final module exam (credit): 12–20 points.
