Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful completion of the theoretical courses in Introduction to French Philology, History of the French Language, Lexicology, Theoretical Grammar, Stylistics and Text Linguistics, which were taught over the courses.
Course content
The course forms part of the optional professional-oriented modules and is logically linked to courses in French linguistics and cultural studies, an introduction to French philology, and French lexicology. The subject of study is the French language as a means of international communication in various fields, its role in the modern globalised world, and the communicative-pragmatic aspects of its functioning. It aims to foster the development of the Master’s student’s academic competencies, the ability to think critically, acquire up-to-date knowledge, systematise and apply it in research work, develop the professional competencies of a philologist, researcher and translator of the French language, and contribute to deepening knowledge of Francophone contacts and research work in the field of Francophonie.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course comprises two main sections. The first section is devoted to defining the concept of ‘Francophonie’, diplomatic relations between Ukraine and France, and France’s language policy worldwide. The second section focuses on the role of the French language in European institutions, in non-governmental organisations, and in the global promotion of the French language. Classes are conducted in the form of lectures and practical sessions, using interactive teaching methods.
Throughout the semester, practical sessions are held following lectures on the relevant topics.
Assessment methods and criteria
Throughout the semester, following lectures on the relevant topics, seminars are held during which assessment takes place in accordance with the types of work and forms of assessment described in section 7.1. The maximum mark for additional forms of assessment may not exceed 40% of the final mark (up to 40 marks on a 100-mark scale). The final semester mark is composed of marks obtained by the student during the completion of the specified types and forms of assessment, and marks obtained in the examination; the maximum distribution is as follows: 60 marks (60%) – semester assessment and 40 marks (40%) – examination.
If a student scores fewer than 24 marks in the exam (which is 60% of the 40 marks allocated to the exam), these are not added to the semester mark regardless of the number of marks obtained during the semester, and only the number of marks obtained during the semester is entered in the ‘final mark’ column of the examination record.
