Prerequisites and co-requisites
To consolidate the theoretical knowledge acquired in lexicology, stylistics, sociolinguistics, text linguistics, neo-rhetoric, and the theory and practice of translation, and to supplement this with the fundamental theoretical principles of discourse analysis.
Course content
The aim of the course is to supplement the theoretical knowledge acquired in the introduction to translation studies, lexicology, stylistics, text linguistics, neo-rhetoric, and the theory and practice of translation with the fundamental theoretical principles of discourse analysis. The knowledge gained contributes to the development of specialised philological knowledge and enables students to undertake independent research work. The subject of the course is discourse studies as the field of operation of the patterns of various discourses in modern French in synchrony and diachrony. The course aims to provide an understanding of the patterns of development in modern discourse studies; provides an understanding of the paradigm of contemporary discourse studies and trends in this field from a synchronic and diachronic perspective; reveals the characteristics of the development of the discursive process; and develops skills in analysing the discursive features of French speech in comparison with Ukrainian discourse.

Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment takes place throughout the semester in accordance with the types of work and forms of assessment described in section 7.1. A pass mark is awarded based on the student’s performance throughout the semester and does not require any additional assessment. Students who have achieved the minimum passing mark of 60 points receive a ‘pass’. Students who have not achieved the minimum passing mark of 60 points receive a ‘fail’. Students who have scored a total of less than 60 marks over the semester must, in order to pass the course, cover the material on the topics where they are behind by writing independent assignments, essays or, if necessary, a test.
