Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students must be familiar with the characteristics of language teaching as a discipline and subject-specific methodologies; the characteristics of pedagogical discourse; a range of strategies and tactics employed by foreign language teachers; teaching methods and pedagogical techniques used in primary schools; methods for delivering optional and specialised courses in primary and secondary schools; be able to design language courses within curricula, lesson plans and textbooks; apply methods and techniques in various organisational forms of teaching within educational institutions; develop a range of exercises and tasks for pupils to master different aspects of language and speech; overcome psychological and psycholinguistic difficulties in language learning; anticipate areas of cross-linguistic interference; develop lesson plans and deliver lessons and extracurricular activities in primary schools; work with gifted pupils in secondary schools.
Course content
The methodology of teaching foreign languages in higher education is a core discipline that forms an integral part of the training of specialists at Master’s level for their future professional careers; it is designed to ensure the development of methodological competence – the knowledge, skills, ability and readiness to plan, organise, implement, reflect on the process of teaching a foreign language in higher education, and to monitor and assess students’ academic achievements. The methodology of teaching foreign languages in higher education contributes to the development of the ability to apply technologies, approaches, methods, principles and tools for teaching a foreign language; the ability to apply domestic and international experience in foreign language teaching; the ability to monitor and correct students’ knowledge, skills and competences in a foreign language; the ability to solve problems related to the foreign language learning process; and the ability to adapt to changes in the educational environment.

Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment takes place throughout the semester in accordance with the types of work and forms of assessment described in section 7.1. A pass mark is awarded based on the student’s performance throughout the semester and does not require any additional assessment. Students who have achieved the minimum passing mark of 60 points receive a ‘pass’. Students who have not achieved the minimum passing mark of 60 points receive a ‘fail’. Students who have scored a total of less than 60 marks over the semester must, in order to pass the course, cover the material on the topics where they are behind by writing independent assignments, essays or, if necessary, a test.
