Prerequisites and co-requisites
Before starting this course, students should be familiar with the key concepts of contemporary linguistic poetics and theories of literary art, as well as the specific ways in which they are applied in various social practices within French linguistic culture; the main issues in contemporary poetics studies within domestic and international philological paradigms; the main concepts in translation studies from both diachronic and synchronic perspectives within international and domestic traditions; and the key issues in contemporary translation studies as they relate to literary translation.
Course content
The aim of the course is to consolidate the theoretical knowledge acquired in the introductory modules on translation studies, lexicology, stylistics, text linguistics, neo-rhetoric, and the theory and practice of translation, and to supplement this with the fundamental theoretical principles of poetics and the theory and practice of literary translation. The subject of study is poetics as the sphere in which the patterns of literary discourse in the French language and translation operate, both synchronically and diachronically. The course aims to explore the patterns of development in contemporary linguistic poetics and literary translation; provides an understanding of the paradigm of contemporary linguistic-poetic studies and trends in literary translation from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives; reveals the characteristics of the development of artistic conceptualisation; and develops skills in analysing the linguistic-poetic features of literary discourse and producing literary translations.

Assessment methods and criteria
Throughout the semester, following lectures on the relevant topics, seminars are held during which assessment takes place in accordance with the types of work and forms of assessment described in section 7.1. Students who have accumulated a total of fewer than the critical minimum of 36 marks will not be permitted to attend the exam. The final semester mark is composed of marks obtained by the student during the completion of the specified types and forms of assessment, and marks obtained in the exam; the maximum weighting is distributed as follows: 60 marks (60%) – semester assessment and 40 marks (40%) – exam. If a student scores fewer than 24 marks in the exam (which is 60% of the 40 marks allocated to the exam), these are not added to the semester mark regardless of the number of marks obtained during the semester, and only the number of marks obtained during the semester is entered in the ‘final mark’ column of the examination record.
