Program Learning Outcomes PLO19. To be familiar with various linguistic schools and movements (literary schools and trends), critically analyze historical achievements and the latest developments in linguistic (literary) science, and demonstrate one’s own interpretation of literary (linguistic) phenomena. PLO20. To possess the skills of independent research (a project, an education-oriented practical project), summarize and publish the results on a current issue (in professional journals, presentations, teaching guides, etc.). PLO22. To apply various linguistic and literary research methods and systematic analysis of literary texts, and identify their compositional, genre, and stylistic features. Full-time form

Successful performance in this course builds on prior knowledge of the history and literary periods of Ukrainian literature acquired within Bachelor programme, and basic terminology and frameworks in literature. Moreover, the course prerequisites emphasize students’ ability to properly use basic literary concepts and terms; to apply critical thinking skills and express personal opinion orally and in a written form; to analyse literary texts and give them critical evaluation. The students are also required to be able to apply their expertise in literary theories to the analysis of works of literature in order to identify literary phenomena; to classify and categorise literature texts according to the subject matter, genre and style, highlighting their salient features.

This course aims to build knowledge on the main ideological strategies and trends, figurative, stylistic and aesthetic aspects of the development of the Ukrainian literature in the 19th – 20th centuries; to promote students’ professional training in understanding the nuance of Ukrainian literature through its literary analysis and interpretation, highlighting ideological and political context of the era and world trends. The course focuses on several content areas: - the main literary periods of Ukrainian mainland and emigration literature development in the 19th – 20th centuries in the context of confrontation or interaction of national and aesthetic norms; - the influence of literature on the development of colonial, anti-colonial, postcolonial discourses and images of Ukrainians in them; - styles in the Ukrainian literature of the 19th – 20th centuries (sentimentalism, classicism, realism, romanticism, modernism, avant-garde, postmodernism); - ideologically unbiased interpretation of Ukrainian literature, literature canons and principles.

The course is delivered in Ukrainian through a mixture of lectures, practical sessions, independent learning, research, and project work. Major activities performed by the students include classroom discussions, individual assignment/presentations, a creative project and module tests. A student can score a maximum of 100 points and a minimum of 40 points for these activities that are components of formative assessment. With a 100-point assessment system used, a final grade for the course is a sum of the points earned for the formative assessment (max – 100; min - 40).Formative assessment is targeted at classroom performance, individual assignment / presentation, a project completed as independent learning task and module tests.
