Learning outcomes
LO11. Understand the principles, techniques, and methods for creating oral and written texts of various genres and styles in the national language, Turkish, and English.
LO12. Analyze linguistic units, identify their interactions, and characterize the linguistic phenomena and processes that underlie them.
LO14. Use Turkish and English, in both oral and written forms, across various genres, styles, and registers of communication (formal, informal, neutral), to solve communicative tasks in the everyday, social, educational, professional, and scientific spheres of life.
LO15. Conduct linguistic, literary, and specialized translation studies analysis of texts of various styles and genres.
LO17. Collect, analyze, systematize, and interpret facts about language and speech, and use them to solve complex tasks and problems in specialized fields of professional activity and education.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Know:
1) the place of the English language in the global linguistic system;
2) the characteristics of the English language as a cohesive system;
3) the rules of phonetic delivery (stress, pauses, intonation) for different types of speech (dialogue, monologue) in accordance with the context of intercultural communication;
4) the functional and stylistic norms for using lexical units from synonymic series, idioms, and expressions in accordance with the context of intercultural communication;
2. Be able to:
1) produce prepared or unprepared monologues and dialogues that summarize and/or supplement the content of what has been heard or seen;
2) apply effective learning strategies in reading and listening;
3) distinguish grammatical structures/phenomena while reading or listening to a text and determine their communicative meaning.
3. Possess:
1) technical skills for creating presentations;
2) the ability to conduct academic research and improve one’s learning strategies.
Course content
The multi-semester course “English” is designed to refine and further develop the foreign language knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired through the university curriculum, and to apply them in research activities. To this end, the course aims to enhance students’ sociocultural, linguistic, professional, and cognitive competencies; foster a positive attitude toward mastering the language and culture of the English-speaking world; and improve the effectiveness of communication in English. The objective of the course is to provide Bachelor’s degree graduates with the necessary communicative competence in the areas of professional, academic, and business communication in both oral and written forms. The course aims to improve students’ sociocultural, linguistic, and professional competencies and enhance the effectiveness of communication in English by: to familiarize students with the specifics of communication in the professional sphere and the fundamentals of academic reading and writing; to systematize knowledge of the lexical and grammatical systems of English; to develop students’ skills in the effective use of linguistic tools in various communicative situations of professional interaction, and to improve their skills in academic translation into English; to deepen students’ theoretical knowledge of modern English syntax; to develop a conscious linguistic identity capable of freely utilizing a wide range of English language tools in the communication process and explaining the purpose of using these tools. The course is taught in the seventh semester and is worth 2 ECTS credits (practical classes - 30 hours, independent study - 30 hours). The semester includes 2 content modules and 2 module tests. The final assessment is an exam.

Practical classes, individual work.
Assessment methods and criteria
The semester score is based on the points received by the student for answering practical classes, writing an academic essay, and completing an ICR. A student can score a maximum of 60 points for work during the semester.
Assessment of semester work:
1. Answer at a practical lesson: 12 - 20 points.
2. Writing an academic essay: 12 - 20 points.
3. Modular control work: 12 - 20 points.
4. Exam: 24 - 40 points.
