Course content
This course is both theoretical and practical in nature and enables students to master the fundamental skills of translation, drawing on concepts such as translation equivalence and translation pragmatics. The course aims to develop students’ skills and abilities in written and oral consecutive translation across various communicative situations; to familiarize students in practice with the main models and patterns of the translation process; to ensure a thorough understanding of the types and modes of translation and their use for the adequate reproduction of the meanings of communicative units in the target language; to teach students to distinguish the genre-stylistic features of different text types; to teach students to distinguish and use various types of transformations applied when translating texts of different styles; to examine the specifics of translating specific categories of vocabulary. The development of practical skills in mastering professional translation techniques takes place through the selection of optimal forms and types of classes that are as close as possible to the future work of translators. The educational objective of the course «Fundamentals of Translation Practice» is to foster professionalism in translation, a sense of responsibility for the completed translation, a constant desire to acquire new knowledge, and high ethical standards.
Classes are conducted as practical sessions, and the course concludes with a final exam.
