PLO 4. Understand the fundamental principles of human, nature and society genesis.
PLO 8. Know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of English language and literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities.
PLO 13. Analyse and interpret works of Ukrainian and foreign fiction and oral folk art, to determine their particularities and place in the literary process.
PLO 15. Perform linguistic, literary and translation analysis of texts of different styles and genres.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students have:
- successfully master the preliminary course of the complex discipline "Historical and Literature Studies", the course of Ukrainian and Western culture, philosophy;
- have basic knowledge of the theory of literature;
- to understand the general laws of the development of literature and culture;
- to have the skills to analyze an artistic text;
- have elementary skills of working with scientific sources
Course content
The aim of the discipline is to acquaint students with the Western literature of the Middle Ages and modern times, namely: with the main stages of the development of literature in Western Europe, from the era of romanticism in America, with the main artistic trends and their genre systems; with creative figures significant for each stage of the development of literature; with the national specificity of leading Western literature and international correlations; as well as with modern methodologies for the analysis of artistic texts, which should contribute to the expansion of the worldview of students and the deepening of their scientific and professional knowledge. The course has a review character, the works selected for study are representative, they are considered in the broad context of the progress of world literature and culture and highlight the national-historical specificity of various Western literatures at certain stages of their development. Teaching methodology - theoretical history of literature with elements of polycriticism.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The teaching of the discipline consists of lectures and practical classes, and also involves independent work of students. During the semester, seminar classes and control tests are held on the relevant topics, at which evaluation is carried out according to the types of work and the form of control. Students who scored a total of less points than the critical calculation min - 36 points are not allowed to take the exam. If during the semester the student does not reach the minimum cut-off grade level, the final semester test is conducted or the essays are evaluated according to the course topics. The maximum grade for additional assessment forms cannot exceed 40% of the max total points for the semester - 24 points. If the student scored less than 24 points on the exam (60% of the 40 points allotted for the exam), then they are not added to the semester grade, regardless of the number of points received during the semester, and "unsatisfactory" is displayed in the examination report.
Assessment methods and criteria
For the answer in the seminar session, the maximum score is 4, the minimum for a positive assessment is 2; the total number of points for answers in seminar classes for the semester is 40, the minimum for a positive assessment is 20;
For a modular test, the maximum score is 10, the minimum for a positive assessment is 8; the total number of points for 2 control papers is 20, the minimum for a positive assessment is 16. The total number of points during the semester for all types of work is 60, the minimum for a positive assessment is 36.
The final assessment is conducted in the form of a comprehensive exam. The maximum number of points on the exam is 40, the minimum (positive evaluation) is 24. The exam is conducted in the form of a written work, the examination ticket consists of three tasks: the first is theoretical, the second is historical and literary in nature, which are evaluated with a max of 15 points, and the third - practical, which is evaluated with a max of 10 points.
