to know: Subject, purpose, tasks, methods of research and fields of use of rocks Modern ideas about the origin of different types of rocks, the processes of magmatism and metamorphism Peculiarities of distribution and conditions of occurrence of igneous and metamorphic rocks The main features of the material composition and structure of igneous and metamorphic rocks Principles of modern classification and nomenclature of igneous and metamorphic rocks Be able: Identify igneous and metamorphic rocks in samples by external features Identify rock-forming minerals of igneous and metamorphic rocks by external features Make macroscopic descriptions of igneous and metamorphic rocks
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Successful completion of the course "Mineralogy with the basics of crystallography" 2. Mastering the skills of macroscopic diagnosis of minerals by external signs
Course content
The discipline "Fundamentals of petrography" provides students with theoretical knowledge about rocks as mineral aggregates and geological bodies, their mineral and chemical composition, main rock-forming minerals, structural and textural features, geological conditions of occurrence and origin. Forms an idea of modern methods of studying rocks, existing principles of their classification and nomenclature, fields of use. Laboratory work allows you to consolidate theoretical material in practice, mastering the skills of macroscopic diagnosis and description of igneous and metamorphic rocks. The purpose of the discipline is to acquaint students with the theoretical foundations of petrography as a scientific discipline that deals with the comprehensive study of rocks, their composition, structure, conditions of occurrence, features of distribution and fields of use. Teach students to identify igneous and metamorphic rocks in samples using macroscopic diagnostic tools.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures, laboratory works, consultations, independent work of the student
Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment: 1) Two control papers on macroscopic diagnosis and description of rocks, 10 points each, together - max 20 / min 12 points 2) Verification of independent descriptions of rocks - max 20 / min 12 points 3) Current survey on macroscopic diagnostics of rocks - max 20 / min 12 points Final evaluation in the form of an exam: max 40 / min 24 points. Final assessment in the form of an exam is mandatory. The results of students' educational activities are evaluated on a 100-point scale. A student is not admitted to the final assessment in the form of an exam if he scored less than 20 points during the semester. Control is carried out according to the modular rating system.
