1.1 Know the nature of theoretical knowledge and its role in sociology as a multiparadigmatic science 1.2 Be able to distinguish the theoretical logic of structural-functional, interactionist, and conflict paradigms in sociology 2.1 Know the basic concepts and categories of theoretical work of key representatives of structural-functional, interactionist, and conflict paradigms in sociology 2.2 Be able to use the conceptual apparatus of key theoretical approaches in sociology to conceptualize a subject of study 3.1 Know the difference between quantitative and qualitative strategies of sociological research and between key methods of collecting and analyzing empirical data in sociology

Sociology in its academic and professional dimensions is impossible without empirical research. However, the design and implementation of sociological research necessarily involves a stage of conceptualization of the object of study, i.e. its description and analysis in terms of a certain theoretical approach. This discipline aims to deepen and systematize students' knowledge of key theoretical approaches and research paradigms in sociology, as well as to reveal the relationship of theoretical approaches with quantitative and qualitative research strategies.

20 points Participation in class discussions - the classes involve various forms of individual and group work on the analysis of readings, a case study, and justification of the principles of a research project 20 points Preparation of a research project with the elaboration of a conceptual scheme of the subject of study, which is based on one of the theoretical approaches covered in the course 20 points Two midterm multiple-choice tests 40 points Final exam (multiple-choice test and a creative task) Admission to exam threshold: 36 points
