Familiarize students with sociology as a science (especially, sociological theory and research, human societies, social groups and institutions, social processes, social struсture etc. ), connection sociology with medicine and sociological problems in medicine

Sociology is the scientific and systematic study of human associations called societies; it is an understanding of how these associations are organized and the reason for their formation. Sociology examines how we and others create and change the world in which we live as well as how we are influenced and changed by the society around us. Sociology also is concerned with the function, structure and roles of social institutions and social processes, with the social behavior of groups. Medical Sociology is an important substantive area within the general field of Sociology. Medical Sociology is concerned with the social facets of health and illness, the social functions of health institutions and organization, as well as the relationship of systems of healthcare delivery to other social systems, and the social behavior of health personnel and all those who are consumers of health.

Lectures, practical classes, independent study

Tasks and in-class discussions participation – in classes will be proposed several forms of individual and group work on different tasks (up to 3 points for the task, up to 6 tasks per module) based on the readings analysis. Control paper – test control after 5 lectures and 6 seminars (up to 15 points). Module control on the theme after 5 lectures of course (up to 15 points). Final control for the module consists from: (1) Test control; (2) Module control; (3) review (comments, questions) of two colleagues’ presentations in class. Final Control for the Course is a Pass-exam done as a short written in class review of the debate on the topic (from the list of the topics debated during the course).
