Prerequisites and co-requisites
Know: 1) research methods used in theoretical phonetics; 2) the latest trends in modern phonetics and phonology, as well as the linguistic schools that are advancing these fields. Be able to: 1) distinguish between integral and differential features of phonemes; 2) analyze the system of vowels and consonants in modern Turkish. Possess: 1) skills in conducting phonostylistic analysis of texts; 2) skills in recognizing different types and varieties of intonation by ear.
Course content
The comprehensive course «General Theoretical Course in Turkic Languages, Part 3: Phonetics of Turkic Languages» is part of the educational and professional training program for specialists at the «Bachelor» level, in the field of knowledge 03 «Humanities», under the major 035 «Philology», major «Eastern Languages and Literatures (including translation), first language—Turkish». The course aims to familiarize students with the basic theoretical terms and concepts of this course, the mechanisms of speech sound production, and their acoustic and physiological properties. This course is designed to develop students’ theoretical and hypothetical thinking and to foster practical language proficiency. Its main objective is to analyze the basic categories and concepts of theoretical phonetics of the Turkish language, identify specific aspects of Turkish sound pronunciation and master the basic orthoepic norms, master the theoretical foundations of the pronunciation norms of the Istanbul variety of Turkish in the flow of speech communication, studying the means of prosody and learning to correctly intonate sentences, place stress, and make pauses. The course is taught in the third semester and consists of 60 hours (2.0 ECTS credits), including: lectures – 16 hours, seminars – 14 hours, and independent study – 30 hours. The course includes two content modules and two module-based assessments. The course concludes with an exam.

Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment is conducted according to the ECTS system, which provides for a two-tier evaluation of the material covered, specifically: evaluation of theoretical knowledge—learning outcomes (knowledge), accounting for 40% of the overall grade; and evaluation of practical skills—learning outcomes (skills); (communication); (autonomy and responsibility), which accounts for 60% of the overall grade. Assessment of semester work: 1. Response during a seminar session: 10–14 points. 2. Module Test No. 1: 11–20 points. 3. Module Test No. 2: 11–20 points. 4. Independent work: 4–6 points. 5. Final exam: 24–40 points.
