Successful completion of the specialised courses “Introduction to Translation Studies,” “Introductory Course in French,” and “Theoretical and Practical Phonetics of the French Language.” French language proficiency at the A2 level.
Course content
The course “Practical Course in Translation from French” is a compulsory component of the full-time study programme and is taught in the third semester of the Bachelor’s degree, in accordance with the curriculum of the Educational and Professional Programme “French Language and Translation, English Language and a Second Romance Language.” The course is worth 2 ECTS credits (60 hours in total), including 28 hours of practical classes and 32 hours of independent study. Within the framework of the course, selected issues of general translation theory are addressed; particular attention is paid to the most challenging grammatical, lexical, and stylistic phenomena in translation, resulting from differences between the French and Ukrainian languages at the levels of system, norm, and usage. The course also covers translation equivalents used in rendering texts from French into Ukrainian at various linguistic and textual levels; differences in the scope of lexical meanings in the two languages; patterns of lexical and semantic compatibility; synonymic series; and phraseological units. In addition to acquiring knowledge and developing skills that constitute the professional competence of a philologist-translator, the course is aimed at overcoming interlingual interference, which inevitably arises in the linguistic awareness of foreign language learners. Classes are conducted in the form of practical sessions. The course is completed with a pass/fail assessment.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Within the course “Practice of Translation from French,” the emphasis is placed on practical work combined with elements of theoretical generalisation. Practical classes focus on translating texts of various genres and styles, analysing translation decisions, and comparing source texts with their translations. Students complete individual and group tasks (translation exercises, case studies, mini-projects) and engage in independent work with authentic texts and reference resources. Teaching methods include a practice-oriented approach, communicative and interactive methods, contrastive analysis, problem-based learning, elements of the case method, as well as the use of digital translation tools and multimedia resources. The course is aimed at developing translation competence, analytical thinking, and overcoming interlingual interference.
Assessment methods and criteria
The course comprises two content modules aimed at developing practical translation skills from French. The first module focuses on translating general texts with an emphasis on key lexical and grammatical difficulties, while the second module covers the translation of texts of various genres and styles using appropriate translation strategies. Classes are conducted in the form of practical sessions using interactive teaching methods. Assessment is carried out throughout the semester based on completed assignments and forms of control. The final pass grade is awarded based on the student’s continuous performance. Students who obtain at least 60 points receive a “pass,” while those with fewer than 60 points receive a “fail.” Students who do not achieve the minimum required score must make up for deficiencies by completing additional assignments.
