Learning outcomes
PLO3. To apply modern methods and techniques, namely informational, in order to perform successful and effective professional activity and guarantee the quality of research in the field of translation. PLO6. To use knowledge on expressive, emotive, logical language means and speech techniques in order to achieve an intended pragmatic result and organize successful communication. PLO7. To analyze, compare and classify various schools and approaches in Linguistic Studies. PLO8. To assess the historical legacy and new achievements of Literature Studies. PLO13. To explain the essence of both specific linguistic issues and one’s own point of view and its justification to experts and laypeople in an accessible and argumentative manner, in particular to individuals who are studying. PLO18. To present the results of one’s research to the academic community in academic publications or presentations at conferences, round tables, seminars, etc.

Course content
Abstract of the academic discipline: The course is composed of two parts: "Development of rhetoric as a science of eloquence and orator’s art" and "Theory of argumentation as an important component of rhetoric." The first is aimed at mastering the tasks and basic concepts of modern rhetoric in their historical setting, at getting acquainted with the best examples of speech, starting from Antiquity. The second is aimed at the analysis of the components of rhetoric as a system and familiarization with the techniques of modern theory of argumentation, which is important for the translator's work.

Assessment methods and criteria
The maximum number of points during the semester is 100 points, in particular, • oral answers (LO 1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.2, 3.1)-max. 15 points, minimum - 9 points; • individual written task for elaboration of academic texts (LO 1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.2, 3.1)-max. 30 points, minimum - 18 points; • written summary of scientific research (LO 1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.4, 3.1-3.2) , 4.1-max. 15 points, minimum - 9 points; • oral presentation of a resume of scientific research (LO 1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.3, 3.1-3.2)-max. 15 points, minimum - 9 points; test (LO 1.1-1.3, 2.2, 3.1)-max. 25 points, minimum - 15 points.
