Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful mastering of the disciplines "Basics of Linguistics", "Oriental Language: Basic Level"; grammatical terminology of the Ukrainian language, the basics of one of the Western European languages.
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to give students of Indology basic knowledge of Sanskrit, namely: to teach them phonetics and graphics, to develop reading and writing skills, to introduce the basics of normative grammar, to provide a basic vocabulary. The discipline belongs to the block of disciplines of the student's free choice and has a practical direction.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The discipline provides only practical classes aimed at the acquisition of phonetic, lexical and grammatical skills of the Sanskrit language by students of Indology in the process of active work in the classroom. Control of students' acquisition of lexical and grammatical minimums is carried out by means of their oral survey and the organization of written tasks, tests, lexical dictations, independent and modular control works. Completion of homework and translation exercises is mandatory.
Assessment methods and criteria
Semestral assessment is based on the oral answers, written tasks, lexical dictations, and translation exercises – 24/40 points, modular test papers – 12/20 points. Final evaluation in the form of exam: max. 40 / min. 24 points (60% of the maximum number of points assigned to the exam); the exam is conducted in written and oral forms, the examinational task consist of three questions, viz. 1) translation of an unfamiliar text from Sanscrit to Ukrainian; 2) grammatical question; 3) oral survey . Students who in total scored less than 36 points during the semester are not allowed to pass the exam.
