Learning outcomes
1 To know the types of academic writing; different types and structures of academic professional texts; general rules of citation and references to sources in the field; basic rules of syntax of academic texts; types of lexical units of professional texts; ways to quickly and efficiently search for and process scientific information; stylistic discursive features of a scientific text; methods of writing a structured scientific paper; rules for compiling a bibliography; basic rules of syntax of a scientific text 2 To communicate in written and oral forms within the framework of a professional topic; correctly apply grammatical structures inherent in scientific English texts To use grammatical structures and vocabulary inherent in academic style in writing and speaking 3 To analyze, compare, classify professional information, see the relationship between parts of the whole; write a report on the results of a scientific study or experiment in the field.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1 Know: lexical and grammatical material necessary for understanding and producing scientific English texts; methods of writing a structured scientific paper; stylistic discursive features of the text; language forms peculiar to official and colloquial registers of professional speech; lexical and grammatical material necessary for understanding of professionally oriented texts; basic rules of English syntax 2 Be able to: communicate in writing within the framework of a professional topic; use adequate lexical and grammatical forms, follow the rules of style; distinguish and create complete samples of scientific communication in a foreign language; abstract and annotate authentic scientific texts:, make an author's annotation to a professionally oriented English-language text and an annotation (in English) to a professionally oriented scientific Ukrainian-language text; independently obtain the necessary information and use it creatively for written English-language communication.
Course content
1 Academic reading as a preparatory stage for academic writing. Types of English-language academic texts. Principles of learning and processing English-language information. Annotating and abstracting scientific information. Quoting and paraphrasing. References. 2 Academic writing. Features of vocabulary and style of scientific writing. Structure, vocabulary and text of a scientific article. Writing author's abstracts for scientific articles, dissertations, reports. 3 Oral and written scientific communication. Structure, vocabulary and text of a scientific report. Presentation of a scientific report and participation in a discussion. 4 Scientific correspondence. Structure, vocabulary and text of scientific correspondence. Structure, vocabulary and text of a resume (application letter) and curriculum vitae (CV). Correspondence with scientific journals (Letter to the Editor; Cover letter). Final control work.

Assessment methods and criteria
Semester grading: 1. Frontal survey - 10 points max / 6 points min 2. Written assignments for independent work - 20 points max / 12 points min (4 final assignments of 5 points / 3 points each) 3. Final control work - 10 points max/ b points min 4. Abstract review of scientific sources (on the topic of research) - 10 points max / b points min 5. Writing an author's annotation and annotated bibliography for the abstract review (on the research topic) - 10 points max / 6 points min. - Final grade: the written exam consists of two tasks and is evaluated with a maximum of 40 points. The first task is to complete a test on the classification, structure and functioning of various types of academic writing and is worth 20 points. The second task is to write an abstract to a Ukrainian-language professional scientific article worth 20 points. The minimum score for successful completion (obtaining an overall positive grade) of the exam is 24 points.
