PLO 6. Use information and communication technologies to solve complex specialized tasks and issues of professional activity. PLO 10. Form of study
Prerequisites and co-requisites
1) Successful completion of courses: general theoretical preparation acquired within the framework of theoretical disciplines; 2) Knowledge of the theoretical foundations of general linguistics, phonetics, morphology, morphemics, syntax, semantics, lexicography; 3) Proficiency in the principles of analyzing linguistic units at all levels, basic skills in selecting, analyzing, and interpreting language phenomena, translation skills, and text editing in Ukrainian and foreign languages; 4) Ability to apply linguistic tools in practice.
Course content
The course "Fundamentals of Applied Linguistics" is part of Elective Block 1 "Linguistics and Third Language." The course covers the main directions of the field of computational linguistics and its conceptual framework. Students acquire necessary knowledge about language and speech from the perspective of computational linguistics and become familiar with typical research methods and basic algorithms for processing linguistic material. The course explores the theoretical foundations and practical implementations of modern Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems, including automatic translation and text editing systems, speech synthesis and recognition, and dialogue systems. During the classes, students have the opportunity to explore new avenues for applying computer technologies in the study of language and speech phenomena and gain experience in solving practical tasks related to text and audio data processing.

Lectures, practical classes, independent work.
Assessment methods and criteria
Continuous assessment methods include practical session participation, laboratory work, and preparation and presentation of reports. The final assessment is an exam. Evaluation criteria for each form of assessment are provided in the course syllabus.
