Full-time form

To succeed, the course requires knowledge of English at the level not lower than B2 of CEFR. In addition, students are supposed: to know the organization of language and basic linguistic concepts and terms, and major varieties of the English language; to be able to use appropriately basic terminology and a conceptual apparatus of linguistics, and to possess the elementary skills of linguistic analysis and interpretation of language development processes.

The discipline is intended to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the tasks and methods of dialectological and sociolinguistic research in linguistics; to determine the main approaches to the study of modern features of English variants and methods of dialectological and sociolinguistic research; to familiarize students with the existing mapping of modern English dialects and variants and to establish the relationship between dialect and dialectal infiltration into standard speech.

The modes of the course delivery encompass lectures, practical classes and self-study, which presuppose such activities as linguistic analysis of language materials, analytical reports, and scientific discussion. The teaching methods include explanations, illustrations, heuristics and research, as well as active methods, which help engage students in the educational process and unlock their scientific and creative potential.

The form of summative assessment is a pass/fail grade. The pass grade is given if students score 60–100 points for their work throughout the semester, which does not presuppose any additional assessment. The students who score less than 60 points are required to prepare a written analysis of language materials with justifications or write a test. Formative assessment takes place on a day-to-day basis and incorporates students’ results for all types of learning activities, incl. self-study.
