Course content
The purpose is to give students an understanding of the complex concept of "orthographic norms" (integrity, orderliness, codification, imperative). Working with the main source, the current Orthography (2019), familiarize students with the principles of systematization of orthographic norms, teach them to use the Orthography of the Ukrainian language to improve the level of culture of written and oral communication, necessary for mastering the future profession of a philologist and the skills of a proofreader, editor, and translator. Since the codification of spelling norms is inseparably connected with the sociolinguistic context, the task also arises to briefly acquaint students with the history of the formation of the spelling system of the Ukrainian language, in particular with the Orthography 1929 and the Kharkiv Spelling Conference that preceded it. This course also gives students an opportunity to get to know the leading standard-setters of the Ukrainian literary language.
