Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Know the lexis and grammar structures as states in the program of foreign language in secondary school.
2. Be able to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in simulated communicative situations.
3. Proficiency in English at a level not lower than B1 +.
Course content
The purpose of the subject is to develop the students’ communicative competence in English for their effective foreign language intercultural communication. The course is communication-oriented and forms the students' English-language communicative competence in all types of speech activities (listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation) using authentic linguistic materials. Major focus of the course is on developing the students’ general translation skills and interpreting abilities that lay the basis for their further learning of other subjects in translation studies.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom and independent work involves students performing the following tasks:
listening: phonetic exercises and transcription exercises; listening tasks using authentic audio and video materials;
reading: reading / summarizing / translation / discussion of the text;
writing: writing texts on the topics of the course; rendering/abstracting newspaper and magazine articles;
speaking: work in pairs (development of speaking skills in dialog); students’ team work on projects on the topic of the curriculum;
translation: doing bilingual exercises that form and develop general translation skills and interpreting abilities;
vocabulary / grammar: work on active vocabulary and doing various lexical exercises; learning grammatical structures and patterns, doing grammar exercises.
Final tests: grammar test of multiple choice, listening, translation of sentences with lexical items and grammatical structures, conversation on the suggested topic, project work.
Assessment methods and criteria
The grade is made up by the points the student receives in the course of current activities on all topics of the semester, doing independent tasks and team work.
Semester covers 3 themes, the maximum number of points in each is 20. Therefore, the student can score a maximum of 60 points for the activities during the semester.
The grade for each theme is the average of all types of activities.
