Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students should know approaches and ways to search for information on the Internet, have basic knowledge of geoinformatics and cartography.
Course content
"Application of GIS in Hydrometeorology" is an elective discipline and aims to provide theoretical foundations and practical skills in the use of GIS technologies to study the patterns of development of atmospheric processes and phenomena; the ability to model and predict atmospheric processes and phenomena, for geovisualization of data. The discipline is closely related to related fields of knowledge, such as geoinformatics, cartography.
The discipline consists of four content modules, is multi-semester, taught in 7 and 8 semesters.
The first module is devoted to the history of the development of geoinformatics in the world and in Ukraine, the basic concepts of GIS. The general concepts of IS, GIS, their differences, prerequisites and stages of GIS development, prospects for the development of GIS and GIT are indicated. Different approaches to the definition of GIS, connection with other disciplines, components, advantages and areas of GIS application are revealed. The main directions of GIS industry, GIS classifications, their functions and requirements are given.
The second module covers the topic of GIS structure and information content. GIS subsystems, their tasks and structure are considered. The theoretical foundations of geographic information mapping are presented. Types of information sources and their general properties, methods of information support and data unification are considered.
The third module deals with the fundamentals of GIS: spatial data, the concept of a spatial object and its description in GIS, vector, raster data, attributes, layers, metadata, etc. Vector and raster data structures are presented in detail.
The fourth module is devoted to databases, their structure, content and DBMS (database management system). The basic concepts of relational databases are considered. The general rules of cartographic works design are presented and the possibilities of geovisualization are considered.
