Prerequisites and co-requisites
This course is based on the knowledge of school chemistry (concept of mole, Avogadro's law and classes of inorganic compounds, theory of electrolytic dissociation, structure of the atom), physics (gas laws, structure of the atom, electricity, magnetism) and mathematics (equations and systems of equations, operations with powers and roots, averages, natural and decimal logarithms, proportionality). The knowledge gained in the course of studying this discipline is the basis for the study of such courses as "Hydrology and Hydrochemistry of Ukraine", "Chemical composition of natural waters", "Hydrochemistry of the world ocean", "Atmospheric chemistry".
Course content
The main objective of the course "General Chemistry" is to provide students of the Faculty of Geography with basic knowledge of general chemistry and skills of the simplest laboratory techniques, which should become the basis for understanding natural processes in the study of special disciplines. This course deals with the basic concepts and laws of general chemistry: the structure of the atom, the regularities of the properties of elements in the periodic system of D.I. Mendeleev, on the basis of which the types of chemical bonds and its influence on the chemical properties of compounds of elements are considered. Students learn to consciously write equations of chemical reactions involving compounds of elements belonging to different classes of inorganic compounds: oxides, bases, acids, amphoteric hydroxides and salts. Coordination compounds and their importance in natural processes. Regularities of the course of chemical processes. Theories of solutions and their chemical properties. An understanding of redox processes based on the position of elements in the Periodic Table. Students learn how to write redox reactions and understand their importance in bio- and geochemical processes. Chemical sources of electricity and corrosion of metals are considered. A general overview is given of the distribution of elements in nature; methods of extraction, physical and chemical properties of metal and non-metal compounds, and the basic laws of geochemistry.
