Learning outcomes
To provide professional knowledge on the theory, methodology and practice of the cartographic method of research as ways of using maps in solving scientific and practical tasks. "Cartographic method of research" in the system of training specialists at the "bachelor" educational level is a mandatory discipline that is part of the comprehensive training of bachelors under the OPP "Cartography, geographic information systems, remote sensing of the Earth"
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
The educational discipline "Cartographic research method" is based on a cycle of disciplines of professional and practical training, in particular: 1) students must have basic knowledge of general geographic and thematic mapping; 2) knowledge of theoretical foundations of mathematics, statistics, probability theory, computer graphics; 3) possession of basic mathematical modeling skills, knowledge of the functionality of geoinformation systems.
Course content
The program of the academic discipline consists of two content modules: The first is devoted to the disclosure of the methodological role of cartography in the Earth and social sciences. Studying the stages of map use, along with the use of maps and the development of geography. Consideration of the cartographic method of research in the "creation-use of maps" system. Determination of the principles of cartographic modeling and properties of cartographic models, as well as the interaction of cartographic and other models. The second one is dedicated to cartographic information, the modern idea of cartographic information, cartographic image and consideration of the cartographic triad: sign, image, information; definition of the system of methods of using cards and classification of these methods. Visual analysis and description on maps. Graphic techniques of map analysis. Cartometry and morphometry. Mathematical modeling.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The level of achievement of all planned learning outcomes is determined by the results of the survey, writing modular control papers (MCR) and performing practical works The specific weight of learning outcomes in the final assessment, provided they are mastered at the appropriate level, is as follows: learning outcomes – 1 (knowledge) – up to 45%; learning outcomes - 2 (skills) - up to 45%; learning outcomes – 3 (communication) - up to 5%; learning outcomes - 4 (autonomy and responsibility) - up to 5%
Assessment methods and criteria
The course includes 2 substantive parts. Classes are held in the form of lectures and practical work. The discipline ends with an exam. Semester evaluation: the number of points that the student receives during the semester is the sum of the points obtained during the evaluation of completed practical work, survey and execution of modular control works. 1. Modular control work 1: RN 1.1–1.4 – 40 / 20 points. 2. Modular control work 2: RN 2.1-2.4 – 40 / 20 points. 3. Independent and practical work: RN 1.1–2.4 – 20 / 10 points. The final grade from the educational component, the final form of control for which the exam is established, is defined as the sum of grades (points) for all successfully assessed learning outcomes.
