Learning outcomes
PLO 16. To know and to understand the basic concepts and categories of Сlassical Philology and the theoretical principles of General Linguistics, to be able to apply them in professional activities.
PLO 23. To understand the ideological bases of various theories of the glottogenesis, to describe linguistic universals and typology of languages, to analyze language as an activity, to apply knowledge of various linguistics branches in professional activities.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1) successful mastering of the academic disciplines "Introduction to Linguistics", "Introduction to Classical Philology", "Ancient Greek language (first semester, second semester)" "Latin language (first semester, second semester)";
2) to gain general knowledge of the historical and cultural contexts of Antiquity, the basics of linguistic terminology, the basics of the grammar of the Ancient Greek and Latin languages;
3) to master basic skills and interpretation skills of linguistic phenomena as a social issues and systemic structures, skills of formal and substantive analysis of categorical features of language units of different levels - from phonetic to syntactic one.
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to train specialists in philology, who would thoroughly possess the theoretical foundations and practical skills of analysis, evaluation and interpretation of the history of formation and development, methodology and problems of linguistic trends and schools from antiquity to modern times. The course involves clarifying the social basis of linguistic knowledge at each stage of its development, theoretical and methodological principles that characterise certain traditions, trends and schools in linguistics from antiquity to modern times, the study of the internal logic of the development of knowledge about language and the problems of progress in linguistics. The structure of the discipline consists of 2 content parts (16 topics), which provide a conceptual analysis of the significance of the achievements of ancient Indian, ancient Chinese, Greco-Roman linguistic traditions for the development of world linguistics with the application of the full spectrum of the student's educational activities - classroom, independent (in particular, scientific).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course provides for the following forms of education: 1) lectures, work in practical classes - oral response, additions, participation in a discussion, report (max. 30); 2) preparation and defense of educational projects (essays / presentation) - (1 out of 10 points (max. 10), which includes a component of evaluating the student's independent work; 3) control papers - testing with closed answers (2 out of 7/10 points (max. 20). For the semester, the student receives a maximum of 60 points / a minimum of 36 points.The discipline is graded with an exam.
Assessment methods and criteria
Students who scored a lower number of points in the study results than the critical calculation minimum (36 points) are not admitted to the exam. In order to be admitted to the exam, students must complete the missed topics in writing, and their independent work on course topics can also be evaluated. The maximum mark for additional assessment forms cannot exceed 40% of the final mark (up to 40 points on a 100-point scale). The semester final grade is formed by the points received by the student in the process of performing the declared types and forms of education, and the points received on the exam. The maximum distribution is carried out according to the following algorithm: 60 points (60%) - semester control and 40 points (40%) - exam.
