Prerequisites and co-requisites
The program is created for students who studied English at secondary school and have the appropriate level of training. The student must know: the principles of language analysis, the features of memorising and its further reproduction in the communication process, approaches to identifying common and distinctive features, comparing and contrasting facts and events from the listened message; be able to: predict the content, highlight the most informative parts of messages, determine the topic, idea and main content of audiotext, establish the logical sequence of audiotext; have basic skills: completing the missing part, based on their own experience and the context concerning the linguistic topics; establishing the connection between audio information and visual support; establishing the relationship between the facts, causes, events and consequences of the audio message; conversion of the received information into large or small language units.
Course content
The education program of the discipline is designed for the first year students in compliance with the new education program of the Institute of philology of Taras Shechenko National University of Kyiv. This programme is a part of a practical course of the English language. Listening training is based on the basic principles of the communicative approach to learning a foreign language using authentic materials and modeling real communicative situations. It is aimed at the ability to understand a foreign language when listening once or twice with or without visual nonverbal support and its subsequent use in various types of communicative situations. Teaching methodology includes interactive, artistic approach to presenting materials and doesn’t set limits on teacher’s and students’ creative initiative.

The curriculum includes such activities: • oral answers in practical classes; • presentations; • exercises performed as individual work; creative tasks.
Assessment methods and criteria
Term assessment: • students can get the maximum of 20 points for the term, • oral answers in practical classes: TR 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3 – 5 points • presentations: TR 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3, 4 – 5 points (5 * 2 = 10) • exercises performed as individual work; creative tasks: TR 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3, 4 – 5 points Final assessment is conducted in the form of an exam: The points students get for this discipline are summed up with the points for the course "Part 2. General English (2nd term)". Students who scored a total ("General English": Part 2 and Part 2.2.) of less than the critical minimum (36 points) are not allowed to take the exam.
