Course content
The purpose of the course is to acquaint students with one of the fundamental methods of the humanities: hermeneutics, the method of understanding and interpreting texts. Linguistic, literary and cultural aspects will be studied together and so facilitate the development of students' speaking and translation skills. The course has two content parts. The first part is devoted to the typological differentiation of texts – narrative, description, argumentation, dialogue - based on the linguistic markers of the Ancient Greek language. Students will learn the specialist terms used in narratology and text linguistics. The second part is focused on the pragmatic and stylistic characteristics of historical, medical, and philosophical discourses, through the works of Herodotus, Hippocrates, and Plato.
