Learning outcomes
PLO 6. To apply knowledge about expressive, emotional, logical language means and speech technique for the planned pragmatic result achieving and for the successful communication organizing.
PLO 8. To evaluate the historical heritage and the latest achievements in literary studies
PLO 9. To characterize the theoretical background (concepts, categories, principles, basic concepts, etc.) and applied aspects of the chosen philological specialization.
PLO 11. To carry out a scientific analysis of language, speech and literary material, to interpret and to structurize it taking into account appropriate methodological principles, to formulate generalizations based on independently processed data.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
To have the basic skills of morphemic, morphological and syntactic analysis of Latin
language units and skills of lexical, etymological, historical and cultural analysis and
commentary of Latin texts. The course is closely related to other compulsory and elective
disciplines of the major: Latin Language, History of Latin language, History of Roman
Literature, History of Ancient Greece and Rome, History of Ancient Rhetoric, Culture of
Ancient Greece and Rome, Ancient Metrics as the Basis of Modern Poetry, Ancient
Mythology and Modernity, Ancient Plots in World Literature, Communicative Technologies
of Antiquity, Ancient Theatre and Modernity, Ancient Roman Historical Prose, Ancient
Roman Oratorical Prose, Roman Epic and Lyrics and Modernity.
Course content
Objectives of the discipline – Mastering practical skills of hermeneutic research of Latin
texts; further development translation skills, linguistic, historical and cultural analysis of
authentic texts. All aspects of the language are studied in along with the development of
students; translation and hermeneutical skills. The discipline consists of 4 content parts: 1)
Ancient Roman poetry: language, ideas and style: Ovid "Metamorphoses; Lucretius,On
the Nature of Things; 2) Ancient Roman Comedy: Ideas, Language and Style: Plautus,
comedy "The Treasure; 3) Roman historiography and Roman historians: Tacitus "Annals";
4) Roman epigram: Martial. The course is based on the commented reading of Latin texts,
translation and interpretation of Latin texts with historical, literary, real-conceptual,
syntactic, lexical, semantic and stylistic analysis. The issues of systematic changes in the
Latin language, changes in the language norm, as well as the issues of language heredity and
variability of language forms are considered in comparison with the knowledge of other
disciplines.

Lectures; audio and video materials, presentations (Microsoft Power Point); Practical
lessons; independent work.
Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment. The scores for the semester comprise the points for the mastering of
the materials for the entire course. The total score for the semester consists of the points for
the activities during the semester (oral answers, abstract presentations, giving presentations,
test) and independent work (writing abstract, preparing presentations). All types of activities
for the semester are estimated as follows:
100 points maximum,
60 points minimum.
Final assessment: exam 24/40 балів (LR 1.1-1.10; LR 2.1- 2.6; LR 3.1; LR 4.1-4.5).
Final scores for the discipline (60/100 points) is defined as sum of points for the activities
during the semester (36/60) and final assessment — exam (24/40).
