Learning outcomes
To know the current issues of non-traditional sources of hydrocarbons in the world and Ukraine, taking into account environmental aspects; modern methods of research of structures and stratons of Ukraine, promising for the detection of oil and gas in low-permeable rocks (shales, argillites, compacted siltstones and sandstones); features of genesis and location of methane deposits in coal basins. Be able to apply knowledge and practical skills to organize research on low-permeability potentially oil and gas rocks; to design, organize, conduct field and in-house work, laboratory research of potentially promising facilities for non-traditional types of hydrocarbons in Ukraine. Be able to communicate with professionals and experts in the global information environment; adapt to new situations related to the development of unconventional sources of hydrocarbons and make timely decisions to solve problems.
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Knowledge of physics, chemistry, mathematics at the level of non-core specialties, basics of petroleum geology, petrophysics and petrography of reservoir rocks, lithology, regional and historical geology, geochemistry of oil and gas.
Course content
The concept of shale gas, shale oil, tight reservoirs, methane from coal basins, gas hydrates. Features of formation, distribution, material content of rocks containing accumulations of unconventional hydrocarbons. Regions and formations with potentially promising resources for shale gas, shale oil, methane from coal basins and gas hydrates in the world and in Ukraine. Methods of research of shale rocks, tight reservoirs, coal, gas hydrates. Estimation of resources of non-traditional hydrocarbon sources and organizational and legal basis of their development. Technologies of drilling, extraction, transportation of unconventional hydrocarbons. Ecological, social, technical problems of development of unconventional hydrocarbon deposits.
