Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students should have basic knowledge of ancient Greek and modern Greek languages, skills of lexical and word analysis of ancient Greek units, skills of lexical, etymological, historical, cultural analysis and commentary of ancient Greek texts. The discipline is closely related to ancient Greek and modern Greek languages, so that the study of Greek lexicology in diachrony will contribute to better understanding of the lexical phenomena of both languages.
Course content
Objectives of the discipline – to form the knowledge and ideas about the vocabulary of the Greek language and its functioning in diachrony; the systemic nature of the modern Greek vocabulary and the laws that determine its national identity; the continuity of Hellenism and the peculiarities of the formation of the Greek linguistic and cultural environment. The course is based on theoretical studies of the lexical structure of the Greek language in a diachronic aspect and the main issues of the lexicology of the modern Greek language. The facts of systematic lexical changes in the Greek language, changes in the language norm, heredity of the language and variability of language forms, the issues of word formation of the Greek language, basic word models in the aspect of transformation of temporal differences are considered in comparison with the data of the history of the language. The vocabulary of the modern Greek language is studied in regard to the functioning of the language: with the presence of some words and the loss of others, with the lexical borrowing from other languages, with the change of meanings of some words and the stylistic status of others.

Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment. The scores for the semester comprise the points for the mastering of the materials for the entire course. The total score for the semester consists of the points for independent work with theoretical materials, writing abstracts, academic articles, preparing presentations, projects and points for the final test. All types of activities for the semester are estimated as follows: - 100 points maximum, - 60 points minimum. Final score for the discipline is defined as the sum of points for activities during the semester and final test. The final score for the dicipline (60/100) consists of the points for the activities during the semester (48/80) and final test (12/20). Final assessment: credit test.
