Learning outcomes
PLO 8. Know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of English and the two studied Western European languages, and literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 10. Know the rules of standard language and be able to apply them in practice. PLO 11. Know the principles, technologies and techniques of oral and written texts of different genres and styles creation in Ukrainian, English and two other Western European languages. PLO 12. Analyze language units, determine their interaction, and characterize linguistic phenomena and the underlying processes.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Be familiar with the functional styles of the modern French and Ukrainian languages. Be able to use stylistic resources of vocabulary and grammar. Know how to distinguish and apply wordplay, neologisms, colloquial words and jargonisms, means of expressive syntax. Be fluent in the language and possess skills of intercultural communication, know historical and cultural realia; know the basics of the comparative and tive method; be able to work with didactic and audio-visual materials; independently process language material; be familiar with the basics of modern bibliographic culture.
Course content
The normative discipline introduces students to the structure and system of the modern French language, the laws of its functioning as a means of communication, basing on the basic knowledge of the first and second languages, their history, as well as lexical and grammatical systems.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Spelling dictations, vocabulary dictations, vocabulary tests, grammar tests, audio and print text comprehension tasks, topic tests, two-way translation, essays on an offered topic.
Assessment methods and criteria
Term assessment: • vocabulary dictations: LO 2.1–2.4 – 1–5 points. • vocabulary tests: LO 2.5–2.6. - 1-5 points. • grammar tests: LO 1.1–2.6 – 1–5 points. • audio and print text comprehension tasks: LO 1.1–2.6 1–5 points. • topic tests: LO 1.1–2.6 – 1–5 points. • two-way translation: LO 1.1–2.6 – 1–5 points. • an essay on an offered topic: LO 1.1–2.6 – 1–5 points. • scripts of audio materials: LO 1.1–2.6 – 1–20 points. The maximum number of points gained for the term is 60 points. The final assessment is an exam. The minimum (threshold) number of points that a student can get at the exam is 24. The form the exam is oral. Learning outcomes assessed in the exam: LO 1.1, 1.2, 2.1-2.6.
