Course content
The academic discipline "Macromolecules of Bioorganic Nature (Part 2)" introduces students to current ideas about the structure, physicochemical properties, and molecular biological features of lipids. In the context of the discipline, the various functions of lipids in living organisms are also considered: fats, which are a form of energy storage, phospholipids and steroids, which are part of biological membranes, other lipids that are contained in cells in smaller quantities and can be coenzymes, light-absorbing pigments, electron carriers, hormones, secondary mediators during intracellular signal transmission, hydrophobic "anchors" that hold proteins near membranes, chaperones that promote protein folding, emulsifiers in the gastrointestinal tract. Special attention is paid to the unique structural and functional characteristics of lipids, which make them the main elements of all cell membranes. The discipline provides modern insights into the molecular biological features of metabolic processes characteristic of lipids in normal and pathological conditions, as well as the conditions of transport and their participation in the development of atherosclerosis and diabetes.
