Prerequisites and co-requisites
Know: 1) the basic principles, categories, and theoretical framework of general translation theory; 2) methods of achieving equivalence and key paradigms of the translation process. Be able to: 1) independently identify and develop the most effective translation methods and techniques, guided by the latest advances in translation theory and methodology. Possess: 1) the ability to identify outdated concepts and find appropriate equivalents for them in modern language; 2) proficiency in a foreign and native language at a level sufficient to convey complex syntactic structures.
Course content
The comprehensive course «Ottoman Turkish for Academic Purposes. Part 3: Translation of Historical Texts» is dedicated to the study of the theoretical foundations and practical aspects of rendering historical primary sources into the target language. The course aims to develop in students the professional competence necessary for working with texts of cultural and historical significance. The course explains conceptual models of translation (situational, transformational, semantic) and their application in interpreting texts from past eras. Particular attention is paid to methodology and ways of achieving an adequate translation through the use of lexical, grammatical, and stylistic transformations. The program covers issues of conveying cultural realities, titles, and place names, as well as strategies for dealing with archaisms and historicisms. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to independently select the optimal translation model depending on the type of historical source, ensuring pragmatic adequacy and preserving the flavor of the era in the translated text. The curriculum includes 20 hours of practical training and 40 hours of independent study, following which a final assessment in the form of a test is conducted.

Semester assessment: 1. Participation in practical classes: 10 - 15 points. 2. Presentation of a term paper (6–10 pages): 8 -10 points. 3. Translation of a historical source text excerpt: 10 - 25 points. 4. Module Test № 1: 10 - 20 points. 5. Module Test № 2: 10 - 20 points. 6. Course exam: 12 - 20 points.
