Course content
The comprehensive course «Ottoman Turkish for Academic Purposes. Part 2. Linguistic Analysis of Ottoman Turkish Texts» is both theoretical and practical in nature and helps future Turkologists develop the practical experience necessary for the textual (lexical, syntactic) and discursive analysis of Ottoman written sources. The main objective of the course is to familiarize students with the fundamentals of the grammatical structure (features of phonetics, morphology, and syntax) of the Ottoman language; to develop basic skills in reading and analyzing 18th- and 19th-century Ottoman-language texts in literary and journalistic styles. The course content provides students with an introduction to the Ottoman language; enables students to read Arabic-script texts; and develops students’ competencies to perform tasks of a comparative and textual nature. Classes are conducted in a practical format. The course concludes with a credit.
