Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
It is desirable (though not essential) that students be familiar with contemporary concepts in physics and biology concerning the structure of the Universe and the interrelations between living and non-living matter, either through prior study of the course Scientific Worldview or through independent learning.
Course content
The course Fundamentals of Ecology focuses primarily on factorial ecology and synecology (community ecology), as well as on methods for environmental quality monitoring, including the basic principles of environmental impact assessment. Issues related to population ecology (demecology) and organismal ecology are addressed only in relation to broader topics, given that the course is designed for students of philology. In contrast, particular attention is devoted to the principles of environmental policy formation, an overview of its implementation, and the criteria for its effectiveness.
Recommended or required reading and other learning resources/tools
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The teaching process integrates lectures, practical classes, and independent study. Lectures provide a systematic overview of core ecological concepts, ecosystem functioning, anthropogenic impacts, and the principles of sustainable development, using an explanatory-illustrative approach. Practical classes focus on the analysis of environmental case studies, data handling, problem-solving, and environmental impact assessment. Analytical, problem-based, case-study, and project-based methods are employed. Independent study involves engaging with relevant sources, preparing reports, presentations, and mini-projects. Assessment is conducted through tests, written assignments, oral responses, and module-based and final evaluation, incorporating interactive formats such as group work and discussions.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment is carried out throughout the semester in accordance with the specified types of tasks and forms of control. The final form of assessment is a pass/fail credit. The credit is awarded based on the student’s overall performance during the semester and does not involve additional assessment procedures. Students who achieve the minimum passing score of 60 points receive a “pass,” while those who score below 60 receive a “fail.” Students who do not reach the required minimum must complete the outstanding topics by submitting additional assignments, essays, or, if necessary, a written test.
