Prerequisites and co-requisites
Demonstrate knowledge of the general properties of language, including its nature, functions, and structural levels. Possess basic skills in linguistic analysis across all levels of language structure, in line with secondary school curricula, including the analysis of grammatical forms and syntactic constructions, etymological and word-formation analysis, translation, and the analysis and interpretation of sentences and texts.
Course content
The course Latin is a compulsory component taught in the first semester. It introduces students to the fundamentals of Latin phonetics, morphology, word formation, and syntax, as well as to the principles of derivation and borrowing from Latin into modern languages, particularly English and the Romance languages, and to the legacy of Latin sententiae and set expressions. The course focuses on the development of the Latin language and its influence on modern European languages. It provides an overview of Latin vocabulary and grammar, word-formation models, and the semantics of affixes, as well as the role of Latin in professional philological terminology. The course also develops skills in reading, translating, and commenting on Latin texts with the aid of a dictionary, as well as in etymological and word-formation analysis of Latin derivatives.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The teaching process combines lectures, practical classes, and independent study. Lectures provide a systematic presentation of phonetics, morphology, and syntax using the explanatory-illustrative method. Practical classes focus on grammar practice, reading and translating texts, completing lexical and grammatical exercises, and analyzing linguistic phenomena. Teaching methods include the grammar-translation method, drill-based practice, problem-based learning, and elements of the communicative approach. Independent study involves reviewing theoretical material, acquiring vocabulary, translating texts, and preparing mini-projects (e.g., etymology, Latinisms). Digital resources (dictionaries, corpora) are widely used. Assessment is carried out through tests, translations, oral questioning, module assignments, and final evaluation. Interactive formats such as pair and group work, as well as language games, are also employed.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final grade for the course (maximum 100 points) is calculated as the sum of points earned for continuous assessment during the semester and the final exam. Admission to the exam requires successful completion of coursework and active participation throughout the semester. The overall course grade (minimum 60, maximum 100 points) consists of the semester score (minimum 36, maximum 60 points) and the final exam score (minimum 24, maximum 40 points).
