Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful completion of practical Spanish language courses taught over six semesters. Mastery of articulation and modern Spanish pronunciation, as well as the rhythmic and intonational structure of speech in accordance with phonetic norms; reading and understanding authentic texts, comprehending monologues and dialogues spoken by native speakers; the ability to hold a conversation on everyday and cultural topics, and to participate in discussions; mastery of consecutive interpreting skills; the ability to express one’s thoughts logically and coherently in both spoken and written form.
Course content
The course ‘Practical Course in Translation from Spanish’ is included in the list of compulsory modules for full-time students and is taught in the fourth semester of the Bachelor’s degree programme, in accordance with the curriculum of the educational and professional programme ‘Spanish Language and Translation, English Language and a Second Romance Language’. It is taught as a 2-credit module, totalling 60 hours, of which 28 hours are practical and 32 hours are independent study. The course ‘Practical Course in Translation from Spanish’ examines certain issues in general translation theory; it explains the grammatical, lexical and stylistic phenomena that are most difficult to translate, arising from differences between Spanish and Ukrainian at the levels of system, norm and usage. In addition, the course examines equivalents used in translation from Spanish into Ukrainian at various linguistic and textual levels; examples of differences in the scope of meanings of lexical units in the two languages; various instances of lexical-semantic compatibility; synonymic series and phraseological units. The practical course in translation from the first language, in addition to imparting knowledge, developing abilities and forming the skills that constitute the professional competence of a philologist-translator, is aimed at overcoming the phenomena of interlingual interference that inevitably arise in the linguistic consciousness of all those who study foreign languages. Classes are conducted in the form of practical sessions. The course concludes with a test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course ‘Practical Translation from Spanish’ focuses primarily on practical work by students, supplemented by theoretical analysis. Practical sessions are dedicated to translating texts of various genres and styles, analysing translation choices, and comparing the original with the translation. Students complete individual and group tasks (translation exercises, case studies, mini-projects) and work independently with authentic texts and reference resources. The course employs a practice-oriented approach, communicative and interactive methods, contrastive analysis, the problem-solving method, elements of the case study method, digital translation tools and multimedia resources. The course aims to develop translation competence, foster analytical thinking and overcome interlingual interference.
Assessment methods and criteria
The course comprises two content modules designed to develop practical skills in translating from Spanish. The first module covers the translation of general texts, with an analysis of key lexical and grammatical difficulties; the second covers the translation of texts of various genres and styles, employing appropriate translation strategies. Classes are conducted in the form of practical sessions using interactive teaching methods. Assessment takes place throughout the semester based on completed assignments and assessment methods. The final mark is awarded based on the student’s ongoing work. Students who score at least 60 marks receive a ‘pass’ grade; those scoring less than 60 receive a ‘fail’. In the event of an insufficient number of marks, students must make up the shortfall by completing additional tasks.
