Learning outcomes
Learning Outcome 1. Communicate fluently on professional matters with specialists and non-specialists in Ukrainian, Belarusian, English, Czech and Polish, both orally and in writing, and use these languages to facilitate effective intercultural communication.
PRN9. Characterise dialectal and social varieties of the Belarusian, Ukrainian, English, Czech / Polish languages, and describe the sociolinguistic situation.
PRN10. Be familiar with the norms of literary Belarusian, Ukrainian, English, Czech / Polish and be able to apply them in practical activities.
PRN12. Analyse linguistic units, identify their interactions and characterise the linguistic phenomena and processes that determine them.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. To be familiar with the main linguistic features and characteristics of the Belarusian language as a Slavic language, the principles and rules of Belarusian pronunciation and spelling, to know the alphabet, to have a general understanding of language as a system, and to be familiar with linguistic terminology in the field of Ukrainian phonetics.
2. Be able to relate theoretical knowledge to specific phenomena of the Belarusian language, conduct a comparative analysis of linguistic phenomena and processes between the Belarusian and Ukrainian languages; analyse theoretical literature.
3. Possess basic reading and listening skills for Belarusian-language texts, as well as an understanding of the principles of searching for, collecting, accumulating and processing information; possess basic knowledge of Slavic studies disciplines. 4. Successful completion of the following courses: “Lexicology and Phonetics of the Modern Ukrainian Language”, “Introduction to Slavic Philology”.
Course content
The course ‘Phonetics of the Belarusian Language’ forms part of the comprehensive course ‘Modern Belarusian Language’. It aims to explain and provide practical training in the phonetic system of the modern Belarusian language, familiarise students with the main features of the vowels and consonants of the Belarusian language and suprasegmental units, and provide the basic theoretical foundations of phonology. Throughout the course, students explore the articulatory and acoustic nature of the sound units of the Belarusian language, analyse the most common sound changes in speech, and identify their types, causes and conditions of occurrence. Students learn to compare linguistic phenomena in the Belarusian and Ukrainian languages. The course consists of two content modules and includes two module tests. Classes are conducted in the form of lectures and practical sessions using interactive teaching methods. The course concludes with an examination.

Lectures and practical sessions, individual consultations, supervision of students’ independent work and monitoring of its completion, exam.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final term mark is based on the marks obtained by the student whilst completing the specified types and forms of work: oral responses, practical tasks and module tests. The overall mark for the semester consists of marks obtained for classroom work (which combines independent study of theoretical material in preparation for class) and marks obtained in the exam; The maximum weighting is allocated as follows: 60 marks (60%) for the term assessment and 40 marks (40%) for the exam.
