Learning outcomes
To provide professional knowledge in the theory and methodology of thematic mapping, to develop practical skills in compiling thematic maps (socio-economic) and principles of mapping phenomena and processes.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1) know the basics of cartography: methods and tools of mapping, types of maps, types of legends, history of mapping; 2) be able to search and analyze statistical and thematic information for creating maps; 3) have skills in working with modern GIS programs.
Course content
The course consists of three content modules. The first is devoted to the study of the conceptual and methodological foundations of mapping socio-economic phenomena and processes: the principles of developing and classifying socio-economic maps, methods and means of mapping, features of mapping social phenomena, principles and approaches to editing socio-economic maps are disclosed. The second module reveals the subject matter and methodology of creating maps of the economy: agriculture, industry, transport and communication maps. The third module considers the subject matter and methodology of developing infrastructure maps: production and social. This is the creation of maps of the population and demographic situation, service maps, science, education, culture, healthcare. Historical, political-administrative and political maps are considered separately. For different types of maps, the methodology of their development and construction of a cartographic image, the development of a legend, the creation of a design are outlined. The principles of generalization and editing are disclosed.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Total volume 150 hours, including: Lectures – 42 hours Laboratory classes – 28 hours Independent work – 76 hours Consultations – 4 hours
Assessment methods and criteria
The specific weight of learning outcomes in the final assessment, provided that they are mastered at the proper level, is as follows: - semester assessment: 1. Modular test work 1: RN 1.1–1.4, 2.1, 2.2 – 10 points. 2. Modular test work 2: RN 1.5–1.6, 2.3 – 10 points. 3. Laboratory work: RN 1.4 – 4.1 – 30 points. 4. Independent work: RN 1.1 – 1.6 – 10 points. - final assessment: in the form of a credit - The final assessment for the educational component, the final form of control for which is an exam, is determined as the sum of the grades (points) for all successfully assessed learning outcomes 60 points and the exam 40 points. Grades below the minimum threshold level are not added to the final assessment. - It is mandatory to complete all laboratory work and module tests to obtain a positive final grade (60 points or higher).
