LO2. Demonstrate proficiency in the national and foreign languages for written and oral communication, particularly in professional and academic contexts; present research findings in the national and foreign languages.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Know:
- functional styles and genres of English discourse;
- the basics of academic and business discourse genres;
- the characteristics of language use in English academic and business discourse;
- major theories of translation and their critiques;
- key translation strategies and techniques.
Be able to:
- decode the speaker’s intentions by analyzing communicative strategies in spoken and written discourse;
- analyze, contrast, and compare linguistic and discourse phenomena at the sentence, paragraph, and text levels;
- professionally use linguistic terms to explain the phenomena under analysis.
Possess basic skills:
- identify communicative strategies and relate them to the communicative purpose of the text.
Course content
This course is designed to improve the effectiveness of academic and business communication in English by: systematizing knowledge of discourse, linguistic devices, and rhetorical strategies in academic and business discourse; and developing the skills to apply these tools in communication and translation. The course examines academic/business discourse and the process of academic/business communication in today’s globalized world, with a particular focus on critical reading, rhetorical analysis of texts within these discourses, as well as their creation and translation. The course consists of two content modules. Module 1 examines the rhetorical and cultural aspects of academic and business communication and discourse through extensive reading, listening, discussion, and translation. Module 2 focuses on the production of texts in business and academic discourse in English and their translation. In the third semester, the course concludes with a credit.

Assessment methods and criteria
Knowledge control is carried out according to the ECTS system, which provides for a two-level assessment of the material learned, in particular, the assessment of theoretical training - learning outcomes (knowledge), which accounts for 40% of the total grade, and the assessment of practical training - learning outcomes (skills), which accounts for 60% of the total grade.
Assessment of semester work:
1. Participation in the discussion of the topics studied: 5 - 10 points.
2. Project work: 7 - 10 points.
3. Academic essay (integrated reading and writing skills): 6 - 10 points.
4. Academic essay (integrated listening and writing skills): 6 - 10 points.
5. Module test: 12 - 20 points.
