Course content
The aim of the course is to develop students’ translation competence through the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and the mastery of practical skills in analyzing and using lexical units, lexico-grammatical patterns, and grammatical structures of the Ukrainian language in the context of translation into/from the student’s native language. The course is designed to further develop students’ knowledge of Ukrainian vocabulary and grammar as a foreign language, to enhance their ability to effectively use lexical units and grammatical constructions in accordance with linguistic norms and stylistic features of both Ukrainian and the student’s native language, and to equip them with techniques for translating texts of various subject areas. The course consists of two content modules. The first module, devoted to the lexical aspect of language use and translation, covers systemic relations in vocabulary, including lexical-semantic variants of words, synonymy, antonymy, processes of borrowing and neologization, and lexical collocability. It also examines phraseology as a specific component of the lexical system from the perspective of translation. The second module, focused on the grammatical aspect of language use and translation, introduces students to the main types of grammatical substitutions and transformations in different modes of translation. The course addresses issues such as rendering perfective and imperfective verb aspects, participles and adverbial participles, the main parts of the sentence, one-member sentences, and complex sentences of the Ukrainian language into the student’s native language. The course material also provides an overview of the lexical and grammatical features of Ukrainian texts of different styles.
