Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. A degree in philology (Bachelor’s degree in philological programmes). 2. Knowledge of the theoretical foundations of core linguistic courses (lexicology, stylistics, theoretical grammar, theoretical phonetics, general linguistics, communication theory) 3. Knowledge of methods of linguistic analysis, key linguistic terms, concepts, theories and schools. 4. Ability to analyse linguistic data using linguistic terminology and knowledge of core linguistic courses. 5. Proficiency in linguistic analysis.
Course content
The course ‘Theory of the English Language’ covers a wide range of topics, from the history of the English language and its evolution to its current status as a global language and a language of intercultural communication, as well as the most promising areas of research, namely sociolinguistics, ecolinguistics, corpus linguistics, experimental phonetics, linguistic landscape, multimodality and discourse analysis. Students are set tasks for independent study, requiring analytical observation, linguistic research and the independent examination of contemporary linguistic data.

Assessment methods and criteria
Presentations in seminars, participation in discussions, completion of independent tasks. Semester assessment: 1. Presentations in seminars: 60 marks (10 marks per answer). Minimum number of marks for the semester – 36. Final assessment – Exam – 40 marks. 1. Theoretical (10 marks) 2. Multimodal analysis of media texts (10 marks) 3. Discursive, multimodal, semiotic analysis of video (10 marks)
