Prerequisites and co-requisites
The examination is intended to test professional knowledge of the English language, English language theory and translation, and is aimed at definitively assessing the level of theoretical knowledge, English language proficiency and translation skills of students pursuing a Master’s degree.
Course content
The comprehensive state examination in English assesses proficiency at the phonetic level, evaluating the extent to which spoken language conforms to the phonetic standards of British English. At this stage, the level of prosodic organisation in spoken language is determined. The phonetics of spoken language are compared with orthoepic norms. At the lexical level, the skills and ability to select appropriate lexical items for spoken and written language, vocabulary, and the ability to use linguistic terminology and terms from related fields of knowledge are assessed. At the syntactic level, the ability to correctly form communicative units – sentences of both paratactic and hypotactic types – is assessed, with adherence to the rules of tense agreement and temporal determinants, modality, cohesion, and discourse markers. Knowledge of research methods in modern linguistics and modern English studies is assessed, in particular the ability to characterise various approaches to the study of the English language depending on research objectives, the ability to highlight the features of modern linguistic approaches, and the correct use of linguistic terminology.

Assessment methods and criteria
The first stage (Task 1) involves a theoretical question from the course on the theory of the English language, covering the most well-known and promising areas of research in modern English. The second stage (task 2) involves summarising and translating a text from English into Ukrainian. The third stage (task 3) involves summarising a Ukrainian-language text of 2,000 characters into English and translating a 1,000-character excerpt from the text. The assessment covers knowledge of the English language, knowledge and application of the principles of translation theory and practice, translation techniques and strategies, the ability to find the most appropriate lexical and terminological equivalents in Ukrainian, and the ability to convey the stylistic, genre and discursive characteristics of the text. The fourth stage (task 4) involves an oral interview on current political, social, cultural and scientific topics. Detailed criteria are set out in the Examination Regulations.
