Learning outcomes
PRN 7. To understand the main problems of Persian philology and approaches to their solution using appropriate methods and innovative approaches. PRN 8. To know and understand the language system, the general properties of literature as an art of speech, the history of the Persian language and literature, and to be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PRN 13. To analyze and interpret works of Ukrainian and Persian fiction and oral folk art, to determine their specificity and place in the literary process of Iran and Ukraine. PRN 15. Conduct linguistic, literary and specialist philological analysis of texts in various styles and genres. PRN 16. Know and understand the key concepts, theories and concepts of the chosen philological specialisation, and be able to apply them in professional practice. PRN 19. Possess the skills to participate in academic and applied research in the field of philology.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful completion of the courses ‘Persian Language: Intermediate Level’, ‘Linguistic and Cultural Studies of Iran’, and sections of the integrated courses ‘History of Persian Literature’, ‘Introduction to Philology’, and ‘Literary Studies and Foreign Literature’. Knowledge of the characteristics of the phonetics, vocabulary and grammar of the modern Persian language, acquired through a practical course in Persian.
Course content
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the finest examples of 20th-century Iranian prose and poetry through their socio-cultural interpretation and literary analysis, to provide an understanding of the development of the literary process in Iran during the 20th century, its distinctive features and characteristics, and the development of literary criticism in Persian-speaking countries, and to outline the place of 20th-century Iranian literature within world literature. The course covers the history of the development of 20th-century Persian literature, literary movements, and the system of forms and genres in the works of writers from this period. Using specific literary works, the course demonstrates the dominant trends in Persian-language literature in Iran and beyond, and analyses the relationship between the traditional and the innovative in the works of the leading figures of 20th-century Persian poetry and prose. The course examines the distinctive features of the genre and stylistic diversity of poetic and prose works in 20th-century Iran. The course ‘20th-Century Iranian Literature’ forms part of the compulsory module ‘History of Persian Literature’. Teaching takes the form of lectures and seminars, with independent study required. The course concludes with an examination.

Assessment methods and criteria
Methods of term assessment (max. 60 marks)Oral responses and participation in discussions: Assessment focuses on the depth of understanding of the material, the quality of argumentation, and the independence of judgement (max. 20 marks).Multiple-choice questions: Assessment of knowledge through 10 questions (max. 10 marks). Research assignment (essay/presentation): The depth of research and use of sources (max. 10 marks). Module tests: Two tests worth 10 marks each (max. 20 marks). Final assessment: Exam (max. 40 marks): Conducted in written and oral form. The exam paper contains two theoretical questions (20 marks each). Pass criteria: Admission to the exam: A minimum of 36 marks must be achieved during the semester. Pass mark: A minimum of 24 marks. If a student scores fewer than this, the marks for the exam are not added to the overall mark. Grading scale: 90–100 — excellent, 75–89 — good, 60–74 — satisfactory, 0–59 — unsatisfactory.
