Course content
The course «Lexicology of the Turkish Language» is part of the comprehensive course «General Theoretical Course in Turkic Languages» (Part 4) and is included in the list of required courses taught in the fourth semester of the bachelor’s program - in accordance with the curriculum of the educational and research program «Turkish Language and Literature and Translation, English Language». Within the scope of this course, students develop skills aimed at exploring the lexical richness of the language: grouping words by meaning, the stylistic diversity of Turkish words, the origin of lexical units, and the time of their creation. Students develop the ability to apply the fundamental knowledge of lexicology acquired to conduct their own research and write a corresponding paper on a given topic. Classes are conducted in the format of lectures and seminars. The course consists of two main sections. It covers the lexical meaning of words, the phenomena of synonymy, antonymy, and homonymy in the Turkish language, lexical-semantic groups and fields, loanwords in modern Turkish, phraseology as a branch of Turkish linguistics, and the history of Turkish lexicography. Section 1 covers the following topics: monosemous and polysemous words, primary and secondary meanings of words, terminological vocabulary, professional jargon, and neologisms in the lexical composition of STM. Content Section 2 is devoted directly to the analysis of loanwords (Arabisms, Persianisms, internationalisms) in the lexical composition of STM, active and passive vocabulary, and the characteristic features of Turkish translation and terminology dictionaries. The course concludes with a final project.
